Sometimes I Miss the Old Me Who Just Shot for Fun

There was a time when photography felt lighter. I used to go out with my camera just because I wanted to — not because I had deadlines, deliverables, and expectations to meet. It was instinctual. I chased light, waited for the perfect moment, played with framing. I wasn’t thinking about reels or carousels or how many backstage shots I’d need by midnight.

Now, on tour or at festivals, it often feels like a race. One minute I’m on the stage, the next I’m in the pit, switching between photo and video mode so fast it makes my brain spin. I’m trying to capture everything — every angle, every epic moment, every emotion — because I don’t want to miss what could be “the shot.” But in doing that, sometimes I miss the feeling.

That’s why, sometimes, I still shoot for fun. Usually during a support band, or when I’m at a festival with no pressure. I’ll pick a lens, find a quiet spot, and just breathe. I wait for the light to hit right. I listen. I don’t burst through my card just to “cover” everything. I let myself enjoy the moment, instead of chasing it.

Shooting for fun is how I remember why I started. It’s where my eye gets sharper and my heart calms down. I don’t care if the photos are portfolio-worthy. I care that they feel honest.

I’m slowly learning to enjoy it again. It’s not a race anymore — or at least I’m trying not to make it one. One photographer once told me, "If I ever do it as a job, I’ll stop enjoying it." And I understand that. I felt like I lost that spark for a bit. But this job lets me do what I love and make a living from it — and I’m grateful for that. Now, I’m focusing more on quality than quantity, and learning to reconnect with the joy that started it all.

If you’re feeling burned out, try this: go to a local gig without expectations. Shoot with one lens. Don’t edit right away. Just look at the photos later and remember what made you reach for your camera in the first place.

Not everything has to be for content. Sometimes, it’s okay to just create — even if no one sees it.

Want to get back to the fun part of editing too? I created Lightroom presets that help simplify the process and bring your photos to life faster. You can check them out here: gerasymovailona.com/store
